A bear can lose Fat Bear Week and still have had an excellent summer. The public might prefer a rival’s rounder silhouette, but a well-fed brown bear doesn’t need a tournament victory to benefit from the fish it caught. The more consequential result comes later, through the winter.
For the people watching, choosing a favorite adds another pleasure to following the same wild animals over time. A familiar face returns, a younger animal grows, and an old favorite gives viewers something new to notice. Fat Bear Week turns that attention into a shared occasion, with a bracket, a deadline and plenty of room for affectionate nonsense.
The audience responses shared with Discvr capture that mood. Alongside jokes about generous proportions were declarations of loyalty to particular bears and memories of voting in previous years. Some commenters made themselves the subject of the joke, recognizing their own seasonal appetites in a bear’s expanding outline. Those responses describe one comment section, not every viewer, but the mixture is revealing: amusement and attachment can occupy the same sentence.
The attraction starts with something wonderfully easy to understand. These animals look very different after a season of feeding. Understanding why takes the story beyond the photographs, into the river that feeds them and the months when they won’t eat at all.
Fat Bear Week centers on brown bears using Brooks River in Alaska’s Katmai National Park and Preserve. Its online matchups invite voters to compare photographs and consider individual histories. The bear receiving more votes moves forward; the final winner receives a title bestowed by humans. Nothing about the vote changes the conditions the animals face.
In 2026, voting runs September 22–29, with no voting on September 26 or 27. The bracket is scheduled for release on September 18. Matchups open from noon to 9 p.m. Eastern on voting days through the official Fat Bear Week website. As of September 15, the year’s contenders hadn’t been announced, so familiar names shouldn’t be mistaken for a confirmed lineup.
Long before the tournament acquired an international audience, viewers were already watching the bears remotely. Explore’s Brooks River cameras began operating in 2012. The first competition followed an observation made by someone looking closely enough to recognize a change.
In 2014, ranger Mike Fitz noticed a bearcam viewer’s comparison of the same bear in June and September. That contrast helped inspire Fat Bear Tuesday, held on September 30, with Facebook likes determining the result. The experiment expanded into a weeklong event the following year.
The audience wasn’t added after the “beary” idea was complete. A viewer’s observation helped supply the idea itself. The format gave other people a reason to examine the animals, make a choice and return to see how that choice fared.
By 2025, the tournament recorded more than 1.7 million votes from over 100 countries, according to the National Park Service. Those are votes across the competition, not a count of unique people. Even with that distinction, the scale shows how far a comparison of two photographs can travel.
Following a bear over several seasons adds context that a single large silhouette can’t provide. Age, fishing habits, recognizable features and previous appearances give a voter more to consider than which animal occupies the most space in a photograph.
Chunk, bear 32, won the 2025 tournament. Explore’s account of that season describes his return to Brooks River with a fractured jaw and changes in how he fed and interacted with other bears. The injury’s cause wasn’t witnessed. That history belongs to 2025, rather than serving as a current assessment of his condition.
Grazer, bear 128, won in 2023 and 2024. She’s a female whose profile describes adaptable fishing and forceful protection of her cubs. Her record is a useful corrective to the assumption that the contest is simply a procession of enormous adult males.
Then there’s bear 602, nicknamed Floatato. First identified at Brooks River in 2014, he made his tournament debut in 2025. His nickname reflects his lounging in the river. The comedy works without inventing anything about him: an observed posture and an exceptionally accommodating name do the job.
These are different reasons to remember an animal. One history includes an injury, another repeated victories, another a nickname that practically introduces itself. None requires assigning the bears human motives. A fan can care about an individual’s circumstances without deciding that it understands fame or wants applause.
That distinction also protects the pleasure of watching. A wild animal doesn’t have to behave like an agreeable character to remain worth following. It can steal another bear’s fish, retreat from a confrontation or leave the camera’s view without satisfying the audience’s preferred storyline.
Researchers have examined whether recognizing individual bears relates to conservation attitudes. A 2023 study of bearcam viewers, based on a voluntary online survey conducted in 2019, reported a sample of 3,853. About 53% of those answering the favorite-bear question said they had one.
Respondents who reported recognizing individuals or having a favorite also tended to report stronger conservation-related feelings and support intentions. The study didn’t establish that watching the cameras caused those differences. Participants chose to take the survey, recognition wasn’t independently tested, and reported intentions aren’t the same as verified donations or conservation outcomes.
Still, the finding offers a useful question for anyone dismissing the names and loyalties as incidental: could recognizing an individual be part of what makes a distant place matter? Wildlife projects that invite audiences to help name wild animals offer another way to participate. A name doesn’t guarantee concern, but it gives attention somewhere specific to settle.
What the bears must carry into winter
The seasonal change behind Fat Bear Week has a biological purpose. During hyperphagia, a period of greatly increased feeding, bears accumulate reserves that help sustain them through hibernation. The rounded body that makes a voter smile represents energy the animal can use when meals are no longer available.
Bears really do hibernate. Their winter physiology differs from that of smaller hibernators whose body temperatures fall much more dramatically, but that doesn’t make the term incorrect. Heart rate and breathing slow, and the animals rely on stored resources through months without eating or drinking. Katmai’s bears generally enter their dens in October or November, though timing varies.
The National Park Service says bears can lose up to a third of their body mass during hibernation. That’s an upper-range figure, not a prediction that every bear will lose the same proportion. It explains why an autumn photograph can show a very different animal from one taken earlier in the year.
Getting into that condition involves more than standing beside a river full of fish. At Brooks Falls, migrating sockeye salmon encounter an obstacle that can make them easier to catch. Yet access to a productive fishing position isn’t distributed evenly among the bears.
Some wait near the falls for a fish to come within reach. Others pursue salmon through shallower water or search with their faces submerged. Bears learn techniques from their mothers and through their own experience. Their size, skill and relationships with other bears affect which opportunities they can use.
That makes repeated observation more interesting than a collection of successful catches. The questions change as viewers learn the setting. Why does one bear hold its position while another moves away? Why does a method that worked earlier stop producing fish? The river’s usefulness changes as salmon move through their life cycle, and the bears have to respond.
For females raising young, the demands extend beyond their own bodies. Some give birth in the den during January or February. Their newborn cubs are small, blind and dependent, and they begin nursing while their mother still isn’t feeding herself.
Her reserves therefore help support more than her own winter maintenance. They also contribute to the nourishment of young that won’t encounter a salmon for months. An adult male, a growing youngster and a mother don’t face identical demands, even when their pictures appear in the same bracket.
The photographs can’t turn those differences into a laboratory ranking. The tournament leaves voters to make a judgment from photographs and the bears’ histories. It isn’t a standardized measurement of body composition. A vote doesn’t identify the animal with the best health or prove which one has the highest chance of surviving.
Katmai has experimented with laser scanning to estimate bear volume, including work in 2019 and 2020. That is a different exercise from choosing a favorite through photographs, and an estimate of volume isn’t a direct reading from a scale. Precise-looking weight claims deserve more scrutiny than a visual impression alone can supply.
There’s no need to strip the competition of humor to make these distinctions. A voter can admire an extraordinary belly while understanding the limits of the picture. The joke becomes more interesting when the body has a history and a purpose.
The food supporting that body also has a history beyond the camera frame. Sockeye salmon bring resources acquired at sea back into freshwater when they return to reproduce. Bears consume some of those fish, but the benefits don’t stop with the animals whose feeding we can watch.
Salmon remains contribute nutrients to riverbank soils and vegetation. The connection reaches organisms that never catch a fish themselves. A bear’s autumn condition is one visible outcome of a system that also includes the ocean, freshwater habitat, other wildlife and the plants beside the river.
That wider view changes what belongs in the story. The bear matters, and so does the route its food traveled. A close photograph can establish an individual’s appeal; a view of the river helps explain how such an animal could grow there.
Nor did the place acquire a human story when webcams arrived. The National Park Service documents nearly 5,000 years of human use at Brooks River, within a longer history across Katmai. Online viewers are a recent audience for a landscape with a much older relationship to people.
Watching responsibly means keeping that larger setting in view while accepting what a camera can’t establish. An animal that disappears from the frame hasn’t necessarily left the area. A still photograph doesn’t explain every injury or interaction. And an illustration of an enormous bear isn’t evidence of a named animal’s condition.
The last distinction matters especially when pictures circulate without their original context. Authentic, dated photographs allow readers to compare an actual individual across a season. Changing its proportions, substituting a generated animal or presenting an old picture as current would remove the very evidence that makes the transformation interesting.
Affection also doesn’t make the bears approachable. They remain wild animals; watching from home offers no reason to imagine that meeting them requires less caution. The intimacy belongs to the viewing experience, not to a personal relationship recognized by the bear.
There are concrete ways for interest to support the park. Katmai Conservancy’s Otis Fund finances education, interpretation and research. That work should be distinguished from the tournament’s popularity: voting, sharing, learning and donating are different actions, and a large audience doesn’t automatically establish a conservation result.
Perhaps the most durable attraction of Fat Bear Week is that the public celebration has a clear ending while the animals’ lives continue beyond it. The winning name can be announced, the bracket completed and the jokes allowed to run their course. The bears still have to make use of everything the summer provided.
For a female nursing cubs underground, the fish caught months earlier will matter long after the final vote. The nourishment accumulated in one season helps sustain young that will eventually emerge into the next.
