“You deserved a kinder world”: swan dies after brutal attack in Portsmouth

A swan that once glided across Canoe Lake in Portsmouth has died after a violent attack by children, leaving rescuers and the community reeling. The bird, a familiar sight in the park, was targeted over the bank holiday weekend in an incident that has sparked grief and anger.

Witnesses told local outlets that a group of children threw sticks and stones at the swan before kicking and stamping on her. An adult was seen nearby but left when confronted, while the children’s parents were reportedly sitting across the park at the time.

The injured swan was taken to Swan Support, a rescue charity specializing in the care of the birds, but she died the next morning. The group confirmed the loss in a statement that resonated widely: “You deserved a kinder world. Fly free now, beautiful girl.”

A community in shock

For Portsmouth, where Canoe Lake’s swans are part of the city’s identity, the attack has left a deep wound. Local residents left flowers and notes along the water’s edge, many expressing disbelief that children could inflict such harm.

Animal welfare groups stressed the importance of teaching respect for wildlife at an early age. Swan Support noted that while they respond to dozens of calls each year for swans injured by fishing hooks, cars, or dogs, an assault like this stands out for its cruelty.

Police confirmed they are investigating the incident. A spokesperson for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said, “We are aware of an incident whereby two children were reported to have attacked a swan at Canoe Lake, Southsea, on Monday, August 25 at around 9 pm. The swan has since died. Enquiries are ongoing.” (Portsmouth News)

Britain’s swans have long held a unique place in the nation’s culture, even protected under the Crown since medieval times. Yet despite this, attacks on the birds have been rising. In 2022, Swan Support recorded a significant increase in cases of deliberate harm.

The charity’s words, shared thousands of times online, captured the grief many felt: “You deserved a kinder world.” For a community that grew up watching the swans at Canoe Lake, the loss feels like more than just the death of one bird — it’s a rupture in something shared, something gentle.
