It’s easy to scroll past this photograph and think it’s just another rocky slope in a remote corner of Northern India.

In this case, photographer Saurabh Desai captured one in the Spiti Valley, perched near 17,000 feet above sea level.

Temperatures sometimes drop to -30°C, yet these powerful cats seem to thrive in the thin air and icy terrain.

“I spent almost three years in search of this amazing cat. When I found it up and close to me, I was speechless,” Desai said, recalling the moment he first encountered the snow leopard he’d been chasing for so long.

The Hidden “Shan”

Locals often call the snow leopard “Shan,” a nod to its stealth. Few people have the chance to see one in person, and even fewer get a clear photo.

That’s partly because the animal is usually covered in pale gray or smoky spots, which match the steep, rocky hillsides where it hunts for mountain sheep and goats.

Its coat isn’t pure white, so blending in becomes even more potent against the stone-studded slopes.

Online, the image drove people into a frenzy. Some spotted the cat in seconds, others claimed they stared for hours.

One viewer wrote that they kept looking for a bright-white leopard and almost gave up before finally detecting a sleek, spotted silhouette.

Another admitted they thought it was just a trick: where was the snow?

Why We Can’t Look Away

In a world packed with viral pictures, this one stands out because it taps into our deep fascination with hidden patterns.

“I wanted this animal to be captured the way people have described it. They say that often they don’t see the ‘Shan’ but ‘Shan’ always sees them,” Desai explained.
