In the turquoise waters off New Caledonia, scientists recently recorded a moment never before seen: two male leopard sharks mating in succession with a single female. The rare sequence, captured on film, marks the first documented case of this endangered species reproducing in the wild.
Dr. Hugo Lassauce of the University of the Sunshine Coast had been monitoring these sharks every week for a year when the event unfolded. For more than an hour, he hovered above a female restrained by two males, his cameras fixed on the scene. “I thought, ‘Something is going to happen – I’m staying right here with my GoPros,’” he recalled. “An hour later, it finally happened.”
The males took turns. The first copulation lasted 63 seconds, the second 47. Then, according to Lassauce, “the males lost all their energy and lay immobile on the bottom while the female swam away actively.” After such a long wait, the entire mating was over in less than two minutes. The team, chilled from the water, broke into cheers. “It’s rare to witness sharks mating in the wild, but to see it with an endangered species — and film the event — was so exciting that we just started cheering,” Lassauce admitted.
Why it matters for conservation
Leopard sharks, also known as zebra sharks (Stegostoma tigrinum), are listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List. Their numbers have plunged in recent decades due to overfishing, accidental bycatch, and the shark fin trade. Slow reproduction and fragile reef habitats make recovery even harder.

For conservationists, the footage is a major breakthrough. Dr. Christine Dudgeon, a co-author of the study, said the video provides “essential evidence that the site in New Caledonia is a critical mating habitat.” Protecting these areas is vital, she added, because it ensures the sharks can reproduce naturally in the wild.
The discovery also reveals new details about leopard shark reproduction, a subject previously studied mainly in captivity. “It’s surprising and fascinating that two males were involved sequentially on this occasion,” Dudgeon said. If multiple paternity proves common, it could strengthen genetic diversity within the population, a key factor for survival. “From a genetic diversity perspective, we want to find out how many fathers contribute to the batches of eggs laid each year by females.”

The specifics of this encounter — from the extended courtship, with males gripping the female’s pectoral fins, to the quick exhaustion that followed — provide valuable data. These insights may help refine breeding programs already underway, such as the international “ReShark” initiative that raises zebra shark eggs in captivity and reintroduces them into depleted reefs.
Beyond the science, the footage emphasizes a deeper truth. By protecting the reefs of New Caledonia, we’re safeguarding not just habitat, but the intimate rituals that sustain a species. As Lassauce and his team celebrated on the boat that day, they knew they had captured more than just rare footage. They had documented a moment that could help secure the future of one of the ocean’s most distinctive sharks.
