Coron Island in the Philippines: The most beautiful island in the world?

Coron Island

Coron Island, in the north of the Palawan Province, Philippines, ranks as one of the world’s most beautiful islands.

Coron Island epitomizes paradise with its tropical blues, pristine white beaches, and scenic lagoons. Its shallow-water coral reefs and freshwater lakes only add to its stunning ecological allure. It boasts a population of 51,803 people.

However, we do have one word of caution: Barracuda Lake. We’re just joking, the “barracuda” part, that is.

Does Barracuda Lake on Coron Palawan, Phillipines have barracuda?

Barracuda Lake, located on Coron Island in Palawan, Philippines, is a captivating dive spot known for its unique thermoclines and crystal-clear waters. Contrary to what its name might suggest, Barracuda Lake is not actually teeming with barracudas. The lake got its name from a single, large barracuda that was once spotted in its waters, but sightings are extremely rare today. The absence of barracudas, however, does not make this lake any less intriguing for divers and adventurers.

The lake is noted for its dramatic shifts in water temperature, which can range from a comfortable 28°C (82°F) to a much warmer 38°C (100°F) as you descend deeper. These temperature shifts create an otherworldly diving experience but could be considered ‘dangerous’ if divers are not adequately prepared or aware of the changing conditions. Despite this, the lake is generally considered safe for diving, as divers follow proper guidelines and protocols.

Here are some of the most interesting activities you can enjoy on the island:

  1. Scuba Diving: Known for its exceptional underwater scenery, Coron is a diver’s paradise. Popular dive sites include the sunken Japanese warships from World War II, making for a fascinating historical exploration.
  2. Island Hopping: An island-hopping tour is necessary with numerous smaller islands and islets surrounding Coron. Visit hidden lagoons, snorkel in crystal-clear waters, and relax on pristine beaches.
  3. Kayangan Lake: Often cited as the cleanest lake in Asia, Kayangan Lake offers a mix of saltwater and freshwater. A hike up a steep mountain trail offers a panoramic view of the lake and its surrounding landscapes.
  4. Hot Springs: Maquinit Hot Springs offers natural saltwater hot springs, providing a perfect setting to relax your muscles after a day of adventure.
  5. Safari Tours: For wildlife enthusiasts, Calauit Safari Park offers a chance to see African and Palawan-native animals, such as zebras and giraffes, in a preserved environment.
  6. Trekking: Take a trek up Mount Tapyas for a 360-degree view of Coron Town and the surrounding islands. The hike involves more than 700 steps but the view at the top is well worth the effort.
  7. Snorkeling: Siete Pecados, Twin Lagoon, and Coral Garden are some of the popular spots for snorkeling. Witness the rich marine life, including vibrant corals and various fish species.
  8. Culinary Experience: Don’t miss the local cuisine. Seafood is exceptionally fresh, and you’ll find a variety of local dishes that represent the region’s rich cultural diversity.
  9. Wreck Diving: Japan used the island as a refueling base during World War II. So there’s known to be some shipwreck-diving tours around as well. Probably best for advanced divers, though. 🤿
