At the heart of the Ionian island of Kefalonia, Greece, a hidden gem awaits discovery by intrepid travelers: Melissani Cave.
A subterranean wonder, the cave has been enchanting visitors for centuries. But not for its supposed “hidden treasure.” The only jewel is the otherworldly beauty and unique ecosystem itself. This breathtaking marvel of nature serves as a testament to the diverse attractions that Greece has to offer.

Melissani Cave’s unique features
Melissani Cave is a geological marvel spanning approximately 525 feet in length and 131 feet in width. Notably, the cave’s most impressive feature is its crystalline lake which reaches a depth of 128 feet. Impressive stalactites and stalagmites enhance the cave’s charm, with some formations over 20,000 years old.
The natural skylight, formed by a collapsed roof, allows sunlight to fill Melissani Cave’s interior.
This spectacular interplay of light and water creates a mesmerizing kaleidoscope of colors that dance across the lake’s surface. The sunlight reflects off the water and illuminates the walls, creating a breathtaking display that awes countless visitors.
Some say the Melissani Cave water is so clear the boats appear to be floating. But don’t think you can just jump in a go for a swim. Swimming is prohibited to maintain the water’s purity.

The Melissani Experience: location and tickets
The journey to Melissani Cave is an adventure. A short drive from Sami, visitors immerse in Kefalonia’s lush landscape before reaching the entrance. For 7 Euros per person, experienced guides navigate small wooden boats through the subterranean waters, showcasing the cave’s features up close.
